As a pastor and concerned citizen, I am compelled to address the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025. While I strongly disagreed with many of his political positions and rhetoric, I unequivocally condemn this act of violence. Political assassination has no place in our democracy and represents a fundamental betrayal of the principles upon which our nation was founded.

My heart goes out to Charlie Kirk's family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. No family should endure such a devastating loss, and no difference of political opinion justifies violence against another human being.

However, as we mourn this tragedy, we must resist the temptation to elevate any political figure—regardless of their beliefs—to martyrdom simply because they died violently. True honor comes from how we live, not how we die. We can acknowledge the humanity and grief of loss without sanctifying divisive rhetoric that has contributed to the toxicity of our current political climate.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk should serve as a sobering reminder of where inflammatory political discourse can lead. For too long, our national conversation has been dominated by language that dehumanizes opponents, questions the legitimacy of democratic institutions, and treats political differences as existential battles rather than policy disagreements among fellow Americans.

This moment demands that we—leaders, media figures, and citizens alike—examine our role in creating a political environment where violence feels justified to some. We must ask ourselves: Are we contributing to healing or further division? Are we modeling the kind of civic engagement that strengthens democracy or tears it apart?

As people of faith and conscience, we are called to something higher. We must be able to critique harmful rhetoric and divisive politics while simultaneously affirming the sacred worth of every human life. We must defend democratic norms and inclusive values without resorting to the very tactics we oppose.

Moving forward, I call upon:

Political leaders to lower the temperature of their rhetoric and focus on policy solutions rather than personal attacks.

Media outlets to prioritize responsible reporting that informs rather than inflames.

Faith communities to model grace, truth-telling, and constructive dialogue.

All Americans to remember that our fellow citizens—regardless of political affiliation—are not enemies, but neighbors with whom we share a common future.

Charlie Kirk's death is a tragedy that should never have happened. Let us honor all victims of political violence not by perpetuating the cycles of hatred and division that led to this moment, but by recommitting ourselves to the hard work of democracy: listening, learning, and finding ways forward together.

May we choose a path of healing, justice, and genuine patriotism—one that strengthens our democracy rather than tears it apart.
